Senior Katie Miller earned Swimmer of the Year recognition to top the 2013 Plain Dealer Girls Swimming All-Stars (2013 Plain Dealer Girls Swimming All-Stars). Senior Mark Belanger also received 2013 Plain Dealer Boys Swimming All-Star honors (2013 Plain Dealer Boys Swimming All-Stars). Firestone teammates Shannon Cahalan, Carly Chelovitz, and Natalie O’Brien were given Special Mention in The Plain Dealer’s list of Ohio State High School notable performers for the 2012-2013 swimming season.
Falcon senior Katie Miller’s distinguished high school swimming career came to a storied close with a state title in the 100-yard backstroke and a record setting, state title in the 200-yard IM (Akron Beacon Journal). Falcon senior Mark Belanger concluded his outstanding high school swimming career with a state title in the 100-yard freestyle and a 3rd place finish in the 200-yard freestyle (Akron Beacon Journal). Firestone junior Natalie O’Brien placed 11th in the 200-yard freestyle. Teammates Lauren Vegh, Katie Miller, Natalie O’Brien, and Carly Chelovitz placed 16th in the 200-yard medley relay while teammates Natalie O’Brien, Shannon Cahalan, Carly Chelovitz, and Katie Miller placed 5th in the 400-yard freestyle relay at the 2013 Division I Ohio State Swimming Championships (Complete Results).

The Firestone Swim Team competed in the Akron North Sectionals (Complete Results) where several excellent performances advanced Falcon relay and individual swimmers to the Northeast District Championships. Mark Belanger turned in two record setting North Sectional wins in the 200-yard and 100-yard freestyle (Akron Beacon Journal) while Katie Miller scored a North Sectional win in the 200-yard IM and a North Sectional record setting win in the 100-yard backstroke (Akron Beacon Journal).
The Falcons wrapped-up their dual meet season Friday night at Shaker Heights where the Girls’ Team won 104.5-77.5 and the Boys’ Team lost 128-52 (Complete Results). Sarah Stutler, Aaris Dowling and Alex Michael turned in swimmer of the meet performances.
On Saturday the Falcons headed to Canton where excellent swims all around characterized the day of competition for Firestone athletes at the Timken Championships (Complete Results).
Firestone High School celebrated the swimming careers of eight seniors – Mark Belanger, Jacquiline Brown, Joey Chadbourne, Markayla Mariner, Maddison Merritt, Katie Miller, Kelsi Reynolds, John Scantling – with a pair of wins as the Falcon Girls’ and Boys’ Teams defeated Brunswick at Firestone Natatorium (Complete Results). Anne Scantling and Alex Michael were named swimmer of the meet while Firestone Senior Katie Miller set a pool record in the 100 back (56.82) and Firestone Senior Mark Belanger set a pool record in the 100 free (46.05).
Firestone Swimmers traveled to Solon where the Girls’ Team lost 174-137 and the Boys’ Team lost 217-79 (Complete Results). Competition highlights included swimmer of the meet performances by Calvin Folkert, Maddison Merritt and Anne Scantling as well as pool record setting swims in the 100 Fly and 200 IM by Katie Miller.
The Firestone Swim Team traveled to the University School Hunting Valley Campus where the Falcon Girls’ Team lost to Hathaway Brown 109-76 and the Falcon Boys’ Team lost to University School 142-41 (Complete Results). Meet performance accolades went to diver Chelsea Noble and swimmer Henry Strawn.
Jacquiline Brown earned swimmer of the meet recognition as the Falcon Girls’ Team lost to Toledo St. Ursula Academy 139-125 and Magnificat 150-121. The Falcon Boys’ Team was defeated by Toledo St. Francis De Sales 187-77 and Cleveland St. Ignatius 169-95 (Complete Results).
