2016 “Kids Helping Kids” Marathon Swim – November 5th

AkronChildrensAt 6:00 on Saturday, November 5, 2016, the Firestone High School Swim & Diving Team will kick-off its Twenty-Eight Annual “Kids Helping Kids” Marathon Swim.  The Marathon is a twelve hour event and there will be a swimmer or diver in six lanes of the Firestone High School pool for the duration of the Marathon.  The Marathon is an important part of the proud tradition of the Firestone program and the proceeds are shared by the swim/diving teams and Akron Children’s Hospital.

NICUThe Marathon has always been a lot fun and builds team unity at the start of the swim & diving season.  Even more important, the “Kids Helping Kids” campaign has provided over $163,000 to Akron Children’s Hospital since the Marathon was started twenty-eight years ago.  The Firestone team’s fundraising efforts for the 2016 Marathon will support the third year of a five-year $20,000 pledge to support a pre-op waiting room in the new ambulatory care surgery center at Akron Children’s Hospital.

During October, the Firestone boys and girls will begin to solicit donations from friends, neighbors, families, local businesses and alumni, to support the Marathon on November 5th, 2016.  Each swimmer has a goal of raising $200.

If you would like to make a donation to help the team fulfill their goal, you can make a check out to the Firestone High Aquatic Association (FHAA).  For online donations via credit card, please use the PayPal “donate” button on the web-site home page at www.firestoneswimming.org.  All donations are tax deductible and no amount it too small.  Please consider supporting this worthwhile cause.

An Akron institution that has spawned local, state, national and Olympic champs is celebrating its 50th anniversary. The pool at Firestone High School opened in October 1963, a gift to the community from the Firestone brothers. Since then, hundreds of students have spent their high school years going to early-morning swim practices and dealing with chlorine-damaged hair. Along the way, dozens became All Americans; and a select few earned Olympic medals. The team earned national high school swimming titles in 2000 and 2002. To mark this significant occasion, swimming and diving alumni, parents, supporters and all in the community are invited to the Firestone High Aquatic Association’s Golden Anniversary Bash, the annual fundraising gala for the Firestone Swimming and Diving Team. The event is Jan. 25 from 6-11 p.m. at St. George’s Fellowship Hall, 3204 Ridgewood Road. A reverse raffle will award $2,000 in cash prizes, and there will also be silent and live auctions of items generously donated by sponsors and businesses in the community. The event also includes appetizers, dinner, open bar and dessert. Tickets are $75 with an additional dinner only (no raffle ticket) priced at $25. For tickets, contact Joanna at jtmanz@gmail.com.
